Lament and Confess your Vain Thoughts and Carnal Affections

Confession 2.4 | NIV

The vanity of my thoughts, their neglect of those things which they ought to be conversant with and dwelling upon those things that are unworthy of them and tend to corrupt my mind.

Every inclination of the thoughts of my heart is evil, only evil, and that all the time, Genesis 6:5(NIV) and it has been so from my childhood. Genesis 8:21(NIV)

O how long have I harbored wicked thoughts! Jeremiah 4:14(NIV) Those schemes of folly which are sin! Proverbs 24:9(NIV) From within, out of the heart, come evil thoughts; Matthew 15:19(NIV) which plot mischief on the bed, Micah 2:1(NIV) and carry the heart with the fool’s eyes to the ends of the earth. Proverbs 17:24(NIV)

But God is not in all my thoughts; Psalm 10:4(NIV) it is well if he is in any of them. I have deserted the Rock, who fathered me, and have forgotten the God who gave me birth: Deuteronomy 32:18(NIV) I have forgotten him days without number, Jeremiah 2:32(NIV) and my heart has followed worthless idols and become worthless itself. Jeremiah 2:5(NIV) My inward thought having been that my house will remain forever; Psalm 49:11(NIV) this my way is my folly. Psalm 49:13(NIV)

The carnality of my affections, their being placed upon wrong objects and carried beyond due bounds.

I have set my heart on earthly things, which should have been set on things above, where my treasure is, Matthew 6:21(NIV) where Christ is seated at the right hand of God; Colossians 3:1-2(NIV) these are the things which I should seek.

I have clung to worthless idols and forfeited the grace that could have been mine; Jonah 2:8(NIV) have forsaken the spring of living water, for cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water. Jeremiah 2:13(NIV)

I have panted after the dust of the ground, Amos 2:7(KJV) and have been full of care as to what I shall eat and what I shall drink and what I shall wear, the things which the pagans run after, and the righteousness thereof. Matthew 6:31-33(NIV)

I have lifted up my soul to idols, Psalm 24:4(NIV) and set my eyes on what is nothing; have fixed my eyes on what is seen, which is temporary, but the things that are eternal have been forgotten and postponed. 2 Corinthians 4:18(NIV)

Lament your Disposition to Evil and Confess your Blind Understanding and Stubborn Will

Confession 2.3 | NIV

I must lament my present corrupt disposition to that which is evil, and my aversion to and impotency in that which is good. I must look into my own heart and confess with holy blushing:

The blindness of my understanding and its unaptness to admit the rays of the divine light.

By nature I am darkened in my understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in me due to the hardening of my heart. Ephesians 4:18(NIV)

The things that come from the Spirit of God are foolishness to the man without the Spirit, and, if left to myself, I cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned. 1 Corinthians 2:14(NIV)

I am skilled in doing evil; I know not how to do good. Jeremiah 4:22(NIV) I know nothing, I understand nothing; I walk about in darkness. Psalm 82:5(NIV)

God speaks – now one way, now another – though I may not perceive it. Job 33:14(NIV) I am ever hearing but never understanding; Matthew 13:14(NIV) and I see people, yet they look like trees walking around. Mark 8:24(NIV)

The stubbornness of my will and its unaptness to submit to the rules of the divine law.

I have within me a sinful mind, which is hostile to God. It does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. Romans 8:7(NIV)

You have written for me the many things of your law, but I have regarded them as something alien; Hosea 8:12(NIV) and my corrupt heart has been sometimes ready to say, “Who is the Almighty, that I should serve him?” Job 21:15(NIV) And that I would certainly do everything I said I would. Jeremiah 44:17(NIV) For I have followed the ways of my own heart and whatever my eyes have seen. Ecclesiastes 11:9(NIV) I have followed my sinful nature’s desires and thoughts. Ephesians 2:3(NIV)

The sinews of my neck have been iron, Isaiah 48:4(NIV) and I have made my heart as hard as flint. I have refused to pay attention; stubbornly I have turned my back, Zechariah 7:11-12(NIV) and stopped up my ears like a cobra that will not heed the tune of the charmer, however skillful the enchanter may be. Psalm 58:4-5(NIV)

How I have hated discipline! How my heart has spurned correction! I have not obeyed my teachers or listened to my instructors. Proverbs 5:12-13(NIV)

Lament your Disposition to Evil and Confess your Blind Understanding and Stubborn Will

Confession 2.3 | NASB

I must lament my present corrupt disposition to that which is evil, and my aversion to and impotency in that which is good. I must look into my own heart and confess with holy blushing:

The blindness of my understanding and its unaptness to admit the rays of the divine light.

The blindness of my understanding and its unaptness to admit the rays of the divine light.

By nature I am darkened in my understanding, excluded from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in me, because of the hardness of my heart. Ephesians 4:18(NASB)

The things of the Spirit of God are foolishness to the natural man; neither can I understand them, in and of myself, because they are spiritually appraised. 1 Corinthians 2:14(NASB)

I am shrewd to do evil, but to do good I do not know. Jeremiah 4:22(NASB) I do not know nor do I understand; I walk about in darkness. Psalm 82:5(NASB)

Indeed, God speaks once, or twice, yet I do not notice it; Job 33:14(NASB) I keep on hearing, but I do not understand; Matthew 13:14(NASB) and I see men as trees, walking around. Mark 8:24(NASB)

The stubbornness of my will and its unaptness to submit to the rules of the divine law.

I have within me a mind set on the flesh, which is hostile toward God and does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so. Romans 8:7(NASB)

You have written for me ten thousand precepts of Your law, yet they have been regarded by me as a strange thing; Hosea 8:12(NASB) and my corrupt heart has been sometimes ready to say, “Who is the Almighty, that I should serve Him?” Job 21:15(NASB) And that I would certainly carry out every word that has proceeded from my mouth. Jeremiah 44:17(NASB) For I have followed the impulses of my heart and the desires of my eyes, Ecclesiastes 11:9(NASB) indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind. Ephesians 2:3(NASB)

My neck has been an iron sinew, Isaiah 48:4(NASB) and I have made my heart like flint; I have refused to pay attention, turned a stubborn shoulder, Zechariah 7:11-12(NASB) and stopped my ears like a deaf cobra that does not hear the voice of charmers, or a skillful caster of spells. Psalm 58:4-5(NASB)

How I have hated instruction! And my heart has spurned reproof! I have not listened to the voice of my teachers, nor inclined my ear to my instructors. Proverbs 5:12-13(NASB)

Lament your Disposition to Evil and Confess your Blind Understanding and Stubborn Will

Confession 2.3 | KJV

I must lament my present corrupt disposition to that which is evil, and my indisposedness to and impotency in that which is good. I must look into my own heart and confess with holy blushing:

The blindness of my understanding and its unaptness to admit the rays of the divine light.

By nature my understanding is darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in me, because of the blindness of my heart. Ephesians 4:18(KJV)

The things of the Spirit of God are foolishness to the natural man, neither can I know them, because they are spiritually discerned. 1 Corinthians 2:14(KJV)

I am wise to do evil, but to do good I have no knowledge. Jeremiah 4:22(KJV) I know not, neither do I understand; I walk on in darkness. Psalm 82:5(KJV)

God speaketh once, yea, twice, but I perceive it not; Job 33:14(KJV) but hearing, I hear and do not understand; Matthew 13:14(KJV) and I see men as trees walking. Mark 8:24(KJV)

The stubbornness of my will and its unaptness to submit to the rules of the divine law.

I have within me a carnal mind, which is enmity against God and is not in subjection to the law of God, neither indeed can be. Romans 8:7(KJV)

Thou hast written to me the great things of thy law, but they have been accounted by me a strange thing; Hosea 8:12(KJV) and my corrupt heart has been sometimes ready to say, What is the Almighty, that I should serve him? Job 21:15(KJV) And that I would certainly do whatsoever thing goeth forth out of my own mouth. Jeremiah 44:17(KJV) For I have walked in the way of my own heart and in the sight of my eyes, Ecclesiastes 11:9(KJV) fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind. Ephesians 2:3(KJV)

My neck hath been an iron sinew, Isaiah 48:4(KJV) and I have made my heart as an adamant stone; I have refused to hearken, have pulled away the shoulder, Zechariah 7:11-12(KJV) and stopped my ears like the deaf adder that will not hearken to the voice of the charmer, charm he never so wisely. Psalm 58:4-5(KJV)

How have I hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof, and have not obeyed the voice of my teachers, nor inclined my ear to them that instructed me. Proverbs 5:12-13(KJV)

Confession 2.3 | ESV

We must lament our present corrupt dispositions to that which is evil, and our aversion to and impotency in that which is good. We must look into our own hearts and confess with holy blushing:

The blindness of our understandings and their unaptness to admit the rays of the divine light.

By nature my understanding is darkened, being alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in me, due to the hardness of my heart. Ephesians 4:18(ESV)

The things of the Spirit of God are folly to the natural person; neither can I understand them, in and of myself, because they are spiritually discerned. 1 Corinthians 2:14(ESV)

I am ‘wise’ – in doing evil! But how to do good I know not. Jeremiah 4:22(ESV) I have neither knowledge nor understanding, I walk about in darkness. Psalm 82:5(ESV)

God speaks in one way, and in two, though I do not perceive it; Job 33:14(ESV) I indeed hear but never understand; Matthew 13:14(ESV) and I see men, but they look like trees, walking. Mark 8:24(ESV)

The stubbornness of our wills and their unaptness to submit to the rules of the divine law.

I have within me a mind that is set on the flesh, which is hostile to God and does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot. Romans 8:7(ESV)

Were you to write for me your laws by the ten thousands, they would be regarded by me as a strange thing; Hosea 8:12(ESV) and my corrupt heart has been sometimes ready to say, “What is the Almighty, that I should serve him?” Job 21:15(ESV) And, “I will do everything that I have vowed.” Jeremiah 44:17(ESV) For I have walked in the ways of my own heart and in the sight of my eyes, Ecclesiastes 11:9(ESV) carrying out the desires of the flesh and the mind. Ephesians 2:3(ESV)

My neck has been an iron sinew, Isaiah 48:4(ESV) and I have made my heart diamond-hard; I have refused to pay attention, have turned a stubborn shoulder, Zechariah 7:11-12(ESV) and stopped my ears like the deaf adder that will not hear the voice of charmers or of the cunning enchanter. Psalm 58:4-5(ESV)

How I have hated discipline, and my heart despised reproof! I did not listen to the voice of my teachers or incline my ear to my instructors. Proverbs 5:12-13(ESV)

Confess and Bewail your Original Corruption

Confession 2.2 | NIV

I must therefore confess and bewail my original corruption in the first place: that I am the child of apostate and rebellious parents, and the nature of man is depraved and has wretchedly degenerated from its primitive purity and rectitude, and such is my nature.

ord, you made mankind upright, but men have gone in search of many schemes; Ecclesiastes 7:29(NIV) and despite his riches, man does not endure; he is like the beasts that perish. Psalm 49:20(NIV)

Through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned: Romans 5:12(NIV) Through that one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, including me. Romans 5:19(NIV)

I am of a brood of evildoers; Isaiah 1:4(NIV) my father was an Amorite and my mother a Hittite, Ezekiel 16:3(NIV) and I myself was called (and not miscalled) a rebel from birth; and well do you know how treacherous I am. Isaiah 48:8(NIV)

The nature of man was planted a choice vine of sound and reliable stock, but it has become a corrupt, wild vine, Jeremiah 2:21(NIV) producing the grapes of Sodom and the clusters of Gomorrah. Deuteronomy 32:32(NIV) How the gold has lost its luster, and the fine gold become dull! Lamentations 4:1(NIV)

Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me. Psalm 51:5(NIV) For, who can bring what is pure from the impure? No one! Job 14:4(NIV) Like the rest, I am by nature an object of wrath, because a child of disobedience. Ephesians 2:2-3(KJV)

All people have corrupted their ways; Genesis 6:12(NIV) we have all turned aside, we have together become corrupt; there is no one who does good, not even one. Psalm 14:3(NIV)

Confess and Bewail your Original Corruption

Confession 2.2 | NASB

I must therefore confess and bewail my original corruption in the first place: that I am the child of apostate and rebellious parents, and the nature of man is depraved and has wretchedly degenerated from its primitive purity and rectitude, and such is my nature.

Lord, You made men upright, but they have sought out many devices; Ecclesiastes 7:29(NASB) and being in honor, they did not understand, and therefore did not abide, but became like the beasts that perish. Psalm 49:20(NASB)

Through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned: Romans 5:12(NASB) Through that one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, including me. Romans 5:19(NASB)

I am the offspring of evildoers; Isaiah 1:4(NASB) my father was an Amorite and my mother a Hittite, Ezekiel 16:3(NASB) and I myself was called (and not miscalled) a rebel from birth, and You knew I would deal very treacherously. Isaiah 48:8(NASB)

The nature of man was planted a choice and noble vine, a completely faithful seed, but it has become the degenerate shoot of a foreign vine, Jeremiah 2:21(NASB) producing the grapes of Sodom and the clusters of Gomorrah. Deuteronomy 32:32(NASB) How dark the gold has become, how the pure gold has changed! Lamentations 4:1(NASB)

Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me. Psalm 51:5(NASB) For, who can make the clean out of the unclean? No one! Job 14:4(NASB) I am by nature a child of wrath, because a son of disobedience, even as the rest. Ephesians 2:2-3(NASB)

All flesh has corrupted their way; Genesis 6:12(NASB) we have all turned aside, together we have become corrupt; there is no one who does good, not even one. Psalm 14:3(NASB)
