Beg for the Forgiveness of What has been Amiss in your Prayers

Conclusion 6.2 | KJV

I may then beg for the forgiveness of what has been amiss in my prayers.

Lord, I have not prayed as I ought: Romans 8:26(KJV) who is there that does good and sins not? Ecclesiastes 7:20(KJV) Even when I would do good, evil is present with me, Romans 7:21(KJV) and if to will be present, yet how to perform that which is good, I know not: for the good that I would, I do not; Romans 7:18-19(KJV) so that thou mightest justly refuse to hear, even when I make many prayers. Isaiah 1:15(KJV) But I have a great High Priest, who bears the iniquity of the holy things, which the children of Israel hallow in all their holy gifts; Exodus 28:38(KJV) for his sake, take away all that iniquity from all your people, even all the iniquity of my holy things, and receive me graciously, Hosea 14:2(KJV) and love me freely, Hosea 14:4(KJV) and deal not with me after my folly. Job 42:8(KJV)

Beg for the Acceptance of your Prayers for Christ’s Sake

Conclusion 6.1 | KJV

We may then beg for the audience and acceptance of our poor weak prayers for Christ’s sake.

Now may the God of Israel grant me the things I have requested of him. 1 Samuel 1:17(KJV)

Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer. Psalm 19:14(KJV)

Let thine eyes be open unto the supplication of thy servant and unto the supplication of thy people Israel, to hearken unto them in all that they call unto thee for, for they be thy people and thine inheritance. 1 Kings 8:51-52(KJV)

O my God, let thine ears be attent unto the prayers that I have made: 2 Chronicles 6:40(KJV) O turn not away the face of thine Anointed; remember the mercies of David thy servant, 2 Chronicles 6:42(KJV) even Jesus, who is at thy right hand making intercession for me. Romans 8:34(KJV)

Lord, thou hast assured me that whatever I ask the Father in Christ’s name, thou will give it me. John 16:23(KJV) I ask all these things in that name, that powerful name which is above every name; Philippians 2:9(KJV) that precious name which is as ointment poured forth. Song of Solomon 1:3(KJV) O make thy face to shine upon me, Numbers 6:25(KJV) for the Lord’s sake, Daniel 9:17(KJV) who is the Son of thy love, Matthew 17:5(KJV) and whom thou hearest always. John 11:42(KJV) Good Lord, give me to hear him, and be well pleased with me in him. Matthew 17:5(KJV)

Introduction and Comprehensive Petitions

Conclusion 6.0 | KJV

Of the Conclusion of My Prayers

I am commanded to pray always, Luke 21:36(KJV) to pray continually, 1 Thessalonians 5:17(KJV) to devote myself to prayer, Colossians 4:2(KJV) because I must always have in myself a disposition to the duty, must be constant in it, and never grow weary of it or give it up; and yet, I cannot be always praying, I must come down from this mount. Nor may I be over long, so as to make the duty a task or toil to myself or those who join with me. I have other work that calls for my attendance. Jacob wrestles with the angel, but he must go for the day breaks. Genesis 32:24(KJV) I must therefore think of concluding. The prayers of David, the son of Jesse, must be ended. Psalm 72:20(KJV) But how shall I conclude so as to have the impressions of the duty kept always in the imagination of the thought of my heart?

I may then sum up my requests in some comprehensive petitions, as the conclusion of the whole matter.

Now the God of peace that brought again from the dead the Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, make me perfect in every good work to do his will, working in me that which is well-pleasing in his sight, through Christ Jesus. Hebrews 13:20-21(KJV)

Now the Lord direct my heart into the love of God and into a patient waiting for Christ. 2 Thessalonians 3:5(KJV)

And the God of all grace, who hath called me to his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that I have suffered a while, make me perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle me. 1 Peter 5:10(KJV)

And now, Lord, what do I wait for? Truly my hope is even in thee; Psalm 39:7(KJV) and on thee do I depend to be to me a God all-sufficient. Genesis 17:1(KJV)

Do for me exceeding abundantly above what I am able to ask or think, according to the power that worketh in me: Ephesians 3:20(KJV) and supply all my needs according to thy riches in glory by Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19(KJV)

Pray for the Rich and the Poor, your Enemies and your Friends

Intercession 5.20 | KJV

For those that are rich and prosperous in the world, some of whom perhaps need prayers as much as those that request them.

Lord, keep those that are rich in the world from being high-minded and trusting in uncertain riches, and give them to trust in the living God, who giveth everyone richly all things to enjoy: That they may do good and be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate; that they may lay up in store for themselves a good security for the time to come. 1 Timothy 6:17-19(KJV)

Though it is hard for those that are rich to enter into the kingdom of heaven, Matthew 19:24(KJV) yet with thee this is possible. Matthew 19:26(KJV)

For those that are poor and in affliction, for such there will always be in this world.

Lord, make those that are poor in the world rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, James 2:5(KJV) and give to them to receive the gospel.

O that the poor of the flock may wait upon thee and may know the word of the Lord. Zechariah 11:11(KJV)

Many are the troubles of the righteous; good Lord, deliver them out of them all. Psalm 34:19(KJV) And though no affliction for the present seems to be joyous but grievous; nevertheless, afterward let it yield the peaceable fruit of righteousness to them that are exercised thereby. Hebrews 12:11(KJV)

For my enemies and those that hate me.

Lord, give me to love my enemies, to bless them that curse me, and to pray for them that despitefully use me and persecute me. Matthew 5:44(KJV)

Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do; Luke 23:34(KJV) and lay not their malice against me to their charge; Acts 7:60(KJV) and work in me a disposition to forbear and forgive in love, Colossians 3:13(KJV) as thou requirest I should when I pray. Mark 11:25(KJV)

And grant that my ways may so please the Lord, that even my enemies may be at peace with me. Proverbs 16:7(KJV)

Let the wolf and the lamb lie down together, Isaiah 11:6(KJV) and let there be none to hurt and destroy in all thy holy mountain; Isaiah 11:9(KJV) let not Ephraim envy Judah, nor Judah vex Ephraim. Isaiah 11:13(KJV)

For my friends and those that love me.

And I wish for all those whom I love in truth, that they may prosper and be in health, especially that their souls may prosper. 3 John 1:2(KJV)

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with their spirits. Philemon 1:25(KJV)

Pray for the Young and the Old

Intercession 5.19 | KJV

For the several ages and conditions of men, as they stand in need of mercy and grace.

For those that are young and setting out in the world.

Lord, give to those that are young to remember their Creator in the days of their youth; Ecclesiastes 12:1(KJV) that thereby they may be kept from the vanity which childhood and youth are subject to, and may be restrained from walking in the way of their heart and in the sight of their eyes, by considering that for all these things God will bring them into judgment. Ecclesiastes 11:9(KJV)

Lord, make young people sober-minded; Titus 2:6(KJV) and let the word of God abide in them, that they may be strong and may overcome the wicked one. 1 John 2:14(KJV)

From the womb of the morning let Christ have the dew of thy youth; Psalm 110:3(KJV) and let him be formed in the hearts of those that are young. Galatians 4:19(KJV)

Keep those that are setting out in the world from the corruption that is in the world through lust; 2 Peter 1:4(KJV) and give to those that have been well-educated, to hold fast the form of sound words, 2 Timothy 1:13(KJV) and to continue in the things which they have learned. 2 Timothy 3:14(KJV)

For those that are old and of long standing in profession.

There are some that are old disciples of Jesus Christ; Acts 21:16(KJV) Lord, give them still to bring forth fruit in old age, to show that the Lord is upright, that he is their Rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him. Psalm 92:14-15(KJV)

Now the evil days are come and the years of which they say there is no pleasure in them; Ecclesiastes 12:1(KJV) let thy comforts delight their souls. Psalm 94:19(KJV)

Even to their old age be thou he, and to the hoary hairs do thou carry them thou hast made; I beseech thee bear, yea, do thou carry and deliver them. Isaiah 46:4(KJV)

Those whom thou hast taught from their youth up and have hitherto declared all thy wondrous works, now, also, when they are old and grey-headed, leave them not; Psalm 71:17-18(KJV) cast them not off in their old age; fail them not when their strength fails. Psalm 71:9(KJV)

Let every hoary head be a crown of glory to those that have it, being found in the way of righteousness, Proverbs 16:31(KJV) and give them to know whom they have believed. 2 Timothy 1:12(KJV)

For all the universities, schools, and nurseries of learning.

Let the schools of the prophets be replenished with every good gift and every perfect gift from above, from the Father of lights. James 1:17(KJV)

Cast salt into these fountains and heal the waters thereof, 2 Kings 2:21(KJV) that from thence may issue streams which shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the Most High. Psalm 46:4(KJV)

For the common people of the land.

Give grace to all the subjects of this land, that they may, under the government God hath set over this nation, live quiet and peaceable lives, in all godliness and honesty, 1 Timothy 2:2(KJV) dwelling together in unity, Psalm 133:1(KJV) that the Lord may command a blessing upon his people, even life for evermore. Psalm 133:3(KJV)

Let all of every denomination that fear God and work righteousness, be accepted of him; Acts 10:35(KJV) yea, let such as love thy salvation say continually, The Lord be magnified, that hath pleasure in the prosperity of his servants. Psalm 35:27(KJV)

Pray for the Ministers of God’s Holy Word and Sacraments

Intercession 5.17 | KJV

For all the ministers of God’s holy word and sacraments, the masters of assemblies.

Teach thy ministers how they ought to behave themselves in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, 1 Timothy 3:15(KJV) that they may not preach themselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord, 2 Corinthians 4:5(KJV) and may study to show themselves approved to God, workmen that need not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15(KJV)

Make them mighty in the Scriptures, Acts 18:24(KJV) that from thence they may be thoroughly furnished for every good work, 2 Timothy 3:17(KJV) in doctrine showing uncorruptness, gravity and sincerity, and sound speech, which cannot be condemned. Titus 2:7-8(KJV)

Enable them to give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine, 1 Timothy 4:13(KJV) to meditate upon these things; 1 Timothy 4:15(KJV) to give themselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word, Acts 6:4(KJV) to give themselves wholly to them; and to continue in them, that they may both save themselves and those that hear them. 1 Timothy 4:15-16(KJV)

Let utterance be given to them, that they may open their mouths boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel, that thereof they may speak as they ought to speak, Ephesians 6:19-20(KJV) as able ministers of the New Testament, not of the letter but of the Spirit; 2 Corinthians 3:6(KJV) and let them obtain mercy of the Lord to be faithful. 1 Corinthians 7:25(KJV)

Let the arms of their hands be made strong by the hands of the mighty God of Jacob; Genesis 49:24(KJV) and let them be full of power by the Spirit of the Lord of hosts, Micah 3:8(KJV) to show thy people their transgressions and the house of Jacob their sins. Isaiah 58:1(KJV)

Make them sound in the faith, Titus 1:13(KJV) and enable them always to speak the things which become sound doctrine, Titus 2:1(KJV) with meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; and let not the servants of the Lord strive but be gentle to all men, apt to teach. 2 Timothy 2:24-25(KJV)

Make them good examples to the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, and in purity; 1 Timothy 4:12(KJV) and let them be clean that bear the vessels of the Lord, Isaiah 52:11(KJV) and let HOLINESS TO THE LORD be written upon their foreheads. Exodus 28:36(KJV)

Lord, grant that they may not labour in vain or spend their strength for nought and in vain, Isaiah 49:4(KJV) but let the hand of the Lord be with them, that many may believe and turn to the Lord. Acts 11:21(KJV)

Pray for your Judges and Judicial Rulers

Intercession 5.16 | KJV

For the magistrates, the judges, and justices of peace in the several counties and corporations.

Make those that rule over my nation just, ruling in the fear of God; 2 Samuel 23:3(KJV) and let those that judge remember that they judge not for man, but for the Lord, who is with them in the judgment, that therefore the fear of the Lord may be upon them. 2 Chronicles 19:6-7(KJV)

Make them able men and men of truth, fearing God and hating covetousness, Exodus 18:21(KJV) that judgment may run down like a river and righteousness as a mighty stream. Amos 5:24(KJV)

Enable my nation’s magistrates to defend the poor and fatherless, to do justice for the afflicted and needy, to deliver the poor and needy, and to rid them out of the hand of the wicked; Psalm 82:3-4(KJV) and let rulers never be a terror to good works, but to the evil. Romans 13:4(KJV)

Pray for all who are Employed in the Conduct of Public Affairs

Intercession 5.15 | KJV

For the privy-counsellors, the ministers of state, the members of Parliament, the ambassadors and envoys abroad, and all that are employed in the conduct of public affairs.

Counsel my nation’s counsellors, and teach its senators wisdom: Psalm 105:22(KJV) O give them a spirit of wisdom and understanding, a spirit of counsel and might, a spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord, to make them of quick understanding in the fear of the Lord. Isaiah 11:2-3(KJV)

O remove not the speech of the trusty nor take away the understanding of the aged, Job 12:20(KJV) nor ever let the things that belong to the nation’s peace be hid from the eyes of those that are instructed with the nation’s counsels. Luke 19:42(KJV)

Make it to appear that thou standest in the congregation of the mighty and judgest among the gods, Psalm 82:1(KJV) and that when the princes of the people are gathered together, even the people of the God of Abraham, the God of Abraham himself is among them; and let the shields of the earth belong unto the Lord, that he may be greatly exalted. Psalm 47:9(KJV)

Let those that be of my nation build the old waste places and raise up the foundations of many generations, that they may be called the repairers of the breaches and restorers of paths to dwell in. Isaiah 58:12(KJV)

Pray for the Safe and Righteous Continuation of your Civil Government

Intercession 5.14 | KJV

For the safe and righteous continuation of my nation’s civil government, that a blessing may attend it, that peace and truth may be established in our days and secured to posterity, and that the hopes of our adversaries and all their aiders and abettors may be extinguished.

Lord, preserve to us the lamp which thou hast ordained for thine Anointed, Psalm 132:17(KJV) that the generation to come may know thee, even the children which shall be born, that they may set their hope in God and keep his commandments. Psalm 78:6-7(KJV)

Let the Protestant faith abide before God for ever: O prepare mercy and truth which may preserve it, so we will sing praise unto thy name for ever. Psalm 61:7-8(KJV) Thus, let the Lord save Zion and build the cities of Judah, and the seed of thy servants shall inherit it, and they that love thy name shall dwell therein. Psalm 69:35-36(KJV)

Let their design who would make a captain to return into Egypt, Numbers 14:4(KJV) be again defeated; and let not the deadly wound that hath been given to the beast be healed any more. Revelation 13:11-12(KJV)

Let our eyes see Jerusalem, the city of our solemnities, a quiet habitation, a tabernacle that shall not be taken down: Let none of the stakes thereof be removed, nor any of the cords thereof be broken, but let the glorious Lord be to us a place of broad waters and streams; for the Lord is our judge, the Lord is our lawgiver, the Lord is our king, he will save us. Isaiah 33:20-22(KJV)
