Petition 3.4 | KJV

The promises God hath made in his word to pardon and absolve all them that truly repent and unfeignedly believe his holy gospel.

Lord, is not this the word which thou hast spoken, that if the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts, and return unto the Lord, even to my God, that thou wilt abundantly pardon, Isaiah 55:7(KJV) wilt multiply to pardon?

To thee, the Lord my God, belong mercies and forgivenesses, though I have rebelled against thee. Daniel 9:9(KJV)

Is not this the covenant which thou hast made with the house of Israel, that thou wilt take away their sins; Romans 11:27(KJV) that thou wilt forgive their iniquity and remember their sin no more; Jeremiah 31:34(KJV) that the iniquity of Israel shall be sought for, and there shall be none, and the sins of Judah, and they shall not be found? Jeremiah 50:20(KJV)

Plead with God the Merit and Righteousness of Jesus Christ

Petition 3.3 | KJV

The merit and righteousness of my Lord Jesus Christ, which I rely upon as my main plea in my petition for the pardon of sin.

I know that as thou art gracious and merciful, so thou art the righteous God that loveth righteousness, Psalm 11:7(KJV) and wilt by no means clear the guilty. Exodus 34:7(KJV) I cannot say, Have patience with me and I will pay thee all, Matthew 18:26(KJV) for I am as an unclean thing, and all my righteousness is as filthy rags. Isaiah 64:6(KJV) But Jesus Christ is made of God to me righteousness; 1 Corinthians 1:30(KJV) being made sin for me, though he knew no sin, that I might be made the righteousness of God in him. 2 Corinthians 5:21(KJV)

I have sinned, but I have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous, who is the propitiation for my sins, and not for mine only, but for the sins of the whole world. 1 John 2:1-2(KJV)

Plead with God His Goodness and Readiness to Forgive Sin

Petition 3.2 | KJV

For the encouraging of my faith and the exciting of my fervency in this petition for the pardon of sin, I may plead with God,

The infinite goodness of his nature, his readiness to forgive sin, and his glorying in it.

Thou, Lord, art good and ready to forgive and rich in mercy to all them that call upon thee. Psalm 86:5(KJV) Thou art a God full of compassion and gracious, long-suffering and plenteous in mercy and truth. Psalm 86:15(KJV)

Thou art a God of pardon, merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, Nehemiah 9:17(KJV) that dost not always chide nor keep thine anger for ever. Psalm 103:9(KJV)

Thou, even thou, art he that blottest out my transgressions for thine own sake, and wilt not remember my sins, which I am here to put thee in remembrance of, to plead with thee, and to declare, that I may be justified. Isaiah 43:25-26(KJV)

I must earnestly pray for the pardon and forgiveness of all my sins.

Lord, I come to thee, as the poor publican that stood afar off and would not so much as lift up his eyes to heaven, but smote upon his breast; and I pray his prayer, God be merciful to me, a sinner: Luke 18:13(KJV) the God of infinite mercy be merciful to me.

Of the Third Part of Prayer, which is Petition and Supplication for the Good Things which I Stand in Need of.

Having opened the wounds of sin, both the guilt of it and the power of it, and its remainders in us, we must next seek unto God for the remedy, for healing and help, for from him alone it is to be expected, and this also he will let us ask him to do for us. Ezekiel 36:37(KJV) And now we must affect our hearts with a deep sense of the need we have of those mercies which we pray for, that we are undone, forever undone, without them; and, with a high esteem and value for them, that we are happy, we are made forever, if we obtain them; that we may like Jacob wrestle with him in prayer, as for our lives and the lives of our souls. But we must not think in our prayers to prescribe to him or by our importunity to move him. He knows us better than we know ourselves and knows what he will do. John 6:6(KJV) But thus, we open our wants and desires, and then refer ourselves to his wisdom and goodness; and hereby we give honor to him as our Protector and Benefactor, and take the way which he himself has appointed, of fetching in mercy from him, and by faith plead his promise with him: And if we are sincere in this, we are, through his grace, qualified according to the tenor of the new covenant to receive his favors, and are to be assured that we do and shall receive them. Mark 11:24(KJV)

I must humbly profess my sorrow and shame for sin, and humbly engage myself in the strength of divine grace, that I will be better and do better for the future.

Lord, I repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand, Matthew 3:2(KJV) to which thou hast exalted thy Son Christ Jesus, to give repentance and remission of sins. Acts 5:31(KJV)

I must give to God the glory of his patience and long-suffering towards me and his willingness to be reconciled.

O the riches of the patience and forbearance of God! Romans 2:4(KJV) How long-suffering is he towards me, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. 2 Peter 3:9(KJV)

Thou hast not dealt with me according to my sin, nor rewarded me after my iniquities, Psalm 103:10(KJV) but thou waitest to be gracious to me. Isaiah 30:18(KJV)

Sentence against my evil works has not been executed speedily, Ecclesiastes 8:11(KJV) but thou hast given me space to repent and make my peace with thee, Revelation 2:21(KJV) and callest even backsliding children, such as myself, to return to thee and hast promised to heal my backslidings; and therefore, behold I come unto thee, for thou art the Lord my God. Jeremiah 3:22(KJV)

Understand the Condemning Nature of your Sin

I must judge and condemn myself for my sins, and own myself liable to punishment.

I know that the law curseth every one that continues not in all things that are written in the book of the law, to do them; Galatians 3:10(KJV) that the wages of every sin is death; Romans 6:23(KJV) and that for these things’ sake the wrath of God cometh upon the children of disobedience. Ephesians 5:6(KJV)

Thou hast chastened me with the rod of men and with the stripes of the children of men, 2 Samuel 7:14(KJV) yet I have not turned to him that smiteth me, nor have I sought the Lord of hosts. Isaiah 9:13(KJV)
