Thank God for His Grace to your Soul and for Design

Thanksgiving 4.10 | KJV

The goodness of his grace relating to my soul and the life that is to come.

But especially blessed be the God and Father of my Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed me with all spiritual blessings in heavenly things in Christ. Ephesians 1:3(KJV)

1st, I must give God thanks for his kindnesses to the children of men, relating to their better part and their future state and his favours to the church in general.

I must give thanks for his gracious design and contrivance of man’s redemption and salvation, when he was lost and undone by sin.

O how wonderfully did the kindness and love of God my Saviour towards man appear, not by any works of righteousness which I have done, but according to his mercy he saved me: Titus 3:4-5(KJV) I had destroyed myself, but in thee, and thee only, was my help. Hosea 13:9 (KJV)

When I was cast out in the open field, and no eye pitied me, thou sawest me polluted in my own blood, and thou saidest unto me, Live; yea, thou saidest unto me, Live; Ezekiel 16:5-6(KJV) and the time was a time of love. Ezekiel 16:8(KJV)

When the redemption of the soul was so precious, as that it must have ceased for ever, and no man could by any means redeem his brother or give to God a ransom for him, Psalm 49:7-8(KJV) then thou wast pleased to find a ransom, that I might be delivered from going down to the pit. Job 33:24(KJV)

When I must needs die, and was as water spilt on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again, then didst thou devise means that the banished might not be for ever expelled from thee. 2 Samuel 14:14(KJV)

When thou sparedst not the angels that sinned, but didst cast them down to hell; 2 Peter 2:4(KJV) thou saidst concerning the rage of mankind, Destroy it not for a blessing is in it. Isaiah 65:8(KJV) appears the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world for his people’s glory. 1 Corinthians 2:7(KJV)

When I have eaten and am full, I have reason to bless thee for the good land which thou hast given me, Deuteronomy 8:10(KJV) a land which the eyes of the Lord my God are always upon, from the beginning of the year even to the end of the year. Deuteronomy 11:12(KJV)

Thou makest peace in my borders and fillest me with the finest of the wheat: Psalm 147:14(KJV) I am delivered from the noise of the archers at the place of drawing water; there, therefore, will I rehearse the righteous acts of the Lord, even his righteous acts toward the inhabitants of his villages. Judges 5:11(KJV)

I thank thee that the powers that are set over me are ministers of God to me for good; Romans 13:4(KJV) that they seek the welfare of your people, speaking peace to all their seed. Esther 10:3(KJV)

Thanksgiving 4.8 | KJV

It is God that girdeth me with strength and maketh my way perfect, Psalm 18:32(KJV) that hath blessed the work of my hands; Job 1:10(KJV) and it may be so, that though my beginning was small, yet my latter end hath greatly increased. Job 8:7(KJV)

My house has been safe from fear, and there hath been no rod of God upon me; Job 21:9(KJV) so that the voice of rejoicing and salvation hath been my tabernacle from day to day. Psalm 118:15(KJV)

With my staff it may be I have passed over this Jordan, and now I am become two bands; Genesis 32:10(KJV) and it is God that setteth the solitary in families. Psalm 68:6(KJV)

If I have lived joyfully with my relations, Ecclesiastes 9:9(KJV) and they have been to me as the loving hind and as the pleasant roe, Proverbs 5:19(KJV) I must give thee thanks for it; for every creature is that to me, and no more, that thou makest it to be.

Thank God for the Supports and Comforts of this Life

Thanksgiving 4.7 | KJV

Blessed be the Lord, who daily loads me with his benefits, even the God of my salvation. Psalm 68:19(KJV)

Thou makest me to lie down in green pastures; thou feedest me beside the still waters; Psalm 23:2(KJV) thou preparest a table for me in the presence of my enemies; thou anointest my head, and my cup runs over. Psalm 23:5(KJV)

It may be I was sent forth without purse or scrip, but lacked I any thing? Nothing, Lord. Luke 22:35(KJV)

The candle of God hath shined upon my head, and by his light I have walked through darkness, and the secret of God has been in my tabernacle. Job 29:3-4(KJV)

Thou hast given me all things richly to enjoy, 1 Timothy 6:17(KJV) and into my hand hast brought plentifully. Job 12:6(KJV)

Many a time I have eaten and been filled, and have delighted myself in thy great goodness. Nehemiah 9:25(KJV)

When I remember all the ways which the Lord my God hath led me for so many years in this wilderness, Deuteronomy 8:2(KJV) I must here set up a stone and call it Ebenezer, for hitherto the Lord hath helped me. 1 Samuel 7:12(KJV)

Thank God for Granting you Recovery from Danger

Thanksgiving 4.6 | KJV

For signal recoveries from danger by sickness or otherwise.

When perhaps there has been but a step between me and death, 1 Samuel 20:3(KJV) and when I have received a sentence of death within myself, 2 Corinthians 1:9(KJV) and have been ready to say, In the cutting off of my days, I should go to the gates of the grave and was deprived of the residue of my years; Isaiah 38:10(KJV) yet thou hast in love to my soul delivered it from the pit of corruption and cast all my sins behind thy back. Isaiah 38:17(KJV)

When the sorrows of death have compassed me and the pains of hell have got hold upon me, I have called upon the name of the Lord and have found that gracious is the Lord, and righteous, yea, my God is merciful; I have been brought low, and he hath helped me, Psalm 116:3-6(KJV) and hath delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears, and my feet from falling. I will therefore walk before the Lord in the land of the living. Psalm 116:8-9(KJV)

Thank God for Preserving you

Thanksgiving 4.5 | KJV

I must give thanks for my preservation; that my life is prolonged, and the use of my reason and understanding, my limbs and senses, are continued to me.

It was owing to thy good providence that I died not from the womb, and did not give up the ghost when I came out of the belly; that the knees prevented me, and the breasts that I should suck. Job 3:11-12(KJV)

Though I was called a transgressor from the womb, Isaiah 48:8(KJV) yet by thy power I have been borne from the belly and carried from the womb; Isaiah 46:3(KJV) and thou holdest my soul in life and sufferest not my foot to be moved. Psalm 66:9(KJV)

All my bones shall say, Lord, who is like unto thee! Psalm 35:10(KJV) for thou keepest the bones, and not one of them is broken. Psalm 34:20(KJV)

I lay me down and sleep, for thou, Lord, makest me to dwell in safety. Psalm 4:8(KJV)

Thou hast given thine angels a charge concerning me, to keep me in all my ways; to bear me up in their hands, lest I dash my foot against a stone. Psalm 91:11-12(KJV) And they are all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for the good of them that shall be heirs of salvation. Hebrews 1:14(KJV)

Thank God for Making you in His Image

Thanksgiving 4.4 | KJV

2dly, With reference to myself in particular.

I must give thanks that he has made me a reasonable creature, capable of knowing, loving, serving, and enjoying him, and that he hath not made me like the beasts that perish.

I will praise thee, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made, and that my soul, my nobler part, knows right well; Psalm 139:14(KJV) for no man knows the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him. 1 Corinthians 2:11(KJV)

Thou hast made me of that rank of beings which is a little lower than the angels and is crowned with glory and honour; Psalm 8:5(KJV) for there is a spirit in man, and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding, Job 32:8(KJV) and the spirit of a man is the candle of the Lord. Proverbs 20:27(KJV)

My body is capable of being the temple of the Holy Ghost, 1 Corinthians 6:19(KJV) and my soul of having the Spirit of God dwell in it; 1 Corinthians 3:16(KJV) I therefore glorify thee with my body and with my spirit, which are both thine. 1 Corinthians 6:20(KJV)

Thou, Lord, hast formed me for thyself, that I might shew forth thy praise. Isaiah 43:21(KJV)

Thanksgiving 4.3 | KJV

The heaven, even the heavens, are thine: but the earth thou hast given to the children of men; Psalm 115:16(KJV) and thou hast put all things under their feet, and made them to have dominion over the works of thy hands; Psalm 8:6(KJV) so that the fear of man and the dread of man is upon every beast of the earth and upon the fowl of the air, and into his hand they are delivered; Genesis 9:2(KJV) because thou hadst a favour to him, and thy delights were with the sons of men. Proverbs 8:31(KJV)

Thou causest the grass to grow for the cattle, and herb for the service of man: that thou mayest bring forth food out of the earth; wine that makes glad the heart of man, and oil to make his face to shine, and bread which strengthens man’s heart. Psalm 104:14-15(KJV)

Thou givest to all life and breath and all things; Acts 17:25(KJV) and the earth, O Lord, is full of thy mercy. Psalm 119:64(KJV)

All the creatures wait upon thee, that thou mayest give them their meat in due season; that thou givest them, they gather; thou openest thy hand, they are filled with good; Psalm 104:27-28(KJV) thou sendest forth thy Spirit, they are created; thou renewest the face of the earth. This thy glory shall endure for ever, and thou rejoicest in these works. Psalm 104:30-31(KJV)

It is through thy goodness, O Lord, that as one generation of mankind passeth away, another generation comes; Ecclesiastes 1:4(KJV) and that thou hast not blotted out the name of that corrupt and guilty race from under heaven. Deuteronomy 29:20(KJV)

Thank God for the Many Instances of His Goodness and Kind Providence

Thanksgiving 4.2 | KJV

With reference to all the creatures and the world of mankind in general. [continued]

Thou didst not leave thyself without witness among the heathen, in that thou didst good and gavest them rain from heaven and fruitful seasons, filling their hearts with food and gladness. Acts 14:17(KJV)

Thou coverest the heavens with clouds, and preparest rain for the earth, and makest grass to grow upon the mountains. Thou givest to the beast his food, and to the young ravens which cry. Psalm 147:8-9(KJV)

Thou causest it to rain on the wilderness, where there is no man; to satisfy the desolate and waste ground. Job 38:26-27(KJV)

Thou visitest the earth and waterest it, thou greatly enrichest it with the river of God, which is full of water; thou preparest them corn, when thou hast so provided for it; thou waterest the ridges thereof abundantly, thou settlest the furrows thereof; thou makest it soft with showers, thou blessest the springing thereof; thou crownest the year with thy goodness, and thy paths drop fatness. Psalm 65:9-11(KJV)

Thou sendest the springs into the valleys, which run among the hills; and they give drink to every beast of the field; and by them the fowls of the heavens have their habitation, which sing among the branches. Psalm 104:10-12(KJV)

Thou hast laid the foundation of the earth, that it should not be removed for ever, Psalm 104:5(KJV) and settest bounds to the waters of the sea, that they turn not again to cover the earth. Psalm 104:9(KJV) Thou hast shut up the sea with doors, Job 38:8(KJV) and broken up for it thy decreed place, saying, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no farther; here shall thy proud waves be stayed. Job 38:10-11(KJV) And thou hast made good what thou hast sworn, that the waters of Noah shall no more go over the earth. Isaiah 54:9(KJV)

Thy covenant of the day and of the night is not broken; Jeremiah 33:20(KJV) but still thou givest the sun for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night, Jeremiah 31:35(KJV) and art faithful to that covenant of providence: That while the earth remains, seed-time and harvest-time, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease. Genesis 8:22(KJV)

Be Particular in your Thanks to God, Marvel at His Good Nature and Kind Providence

Thanksgiving 4.1 | KJV

I must be particular in my thanksgivings to God,

For the discoveries which he hath made to me in his word of the goodness of his nature.

I give thanks unto the God of gods, unto the Lord of lords, for his mercy endures for ever. Psalm 136:2-3(KJV)

Thy goodness is thy glory, Exodus 33:19(KJV) and it is for that which all thy works do praise thee, and thy saints do bless thee. Psalm 145:10(KJV)

Thou art gracious and full of compassion, slow to anger, and of great mercy, Psalm 145:8(KJV) and hast told me that thou dost not afflict willingly or grieve the children of men, but, though thou cause grief, yet thou wilt have compassion according to the multitude of thy mercies. Lamentations 3:32-33(KJV)

Thou takest pleasure in them that fear thee, in them that hope in thy mercy. Psalm 147:11(KJV)

For the many instances of his goodness.

The goodness of his providence relating to my body and the life that now is; and this,

1st, With reference to all the creatures and the world of mankind in general.

Thou hast stretched out the heavens like a curtain, Psalm 104:2(KJV) and in them thou hast set a tabernacle for the sun, which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and rejoiceth as a strong man to run a race. Psalm 19:4-5(KJV) And thou causest thy sun to shine on the evil and on the good, and sendest rain on the just and on the unjust. Matthew 5:45(KJV)

When I consider the heavens, the work of thy fingers, the sun, the moon, and the stars which thou hast ordained, Lord, what is man that thou thus visitest him? Psalm 8:3-4(KJV) For truly the light is sweet, and a pleasant thing it is for the eyes to behold the sun: Ecclesiastes 11:7(KJV) All the glory be to the Father of light, James 1:17(KJV) who commandeth the morning and causeth the day-spring to know his place. Job 38:12(KJV)
