Thank God for your Successes and Good Relationships

Thanksgiving 4.8 | NIV

For success in my calling and affairs, comfort in relations, and comfortable places of abode.

It is God who arms me with strength and makes my way perfect, Psalm 18:32(NIV) who has blessed the work of my hands; Job 1:10(NIV) and it may be that so prosperous will my future be, that my beginning will seem humble. Job 8:7(NIV)

My home has been safe and free from fear, and there has been no rod of God upon me; Job 21:9(NIV) so that shouts of joy and victory have resounded in my tent from day to day. Psalm 118:15(NIV)

It may be I had only my staff when I crossed this Jordan, but now I have become two groups; Genesis 32:10(NIV) and it is God who sets the lonely in families. Psalm 68:6(NIV)

If I have enjoyed life with my relations, Ecclesiastes 9:9(NIV) and they have been to me as a loving doe, as a graceful deer, Proverbs 5:19(NIV) I must give you thanks for it; for every creature is that to me, and no more, that you make it to be.

Thank God for the Supports and Comforts of this Life

Thanksgiving 4.7 | NIV

For the supports and comforts of this life, which have thus far made the land of my pilgrimage easy and pleasant to me.

Praise be to the Lord, to God my Savior, who daily bears my burdens. Psalm 68:19(NIV)

You make me lie down in green pastures; you feed me beside quiet waters. Psalm 23:2(NIV) You prepare a table for me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head, and my cup overflows. Psalm 23:5(NIV)

It may be I was sent forth without purse or bag, but did I lack anything? Nothing, Lord. Luke 22:35(NIV)

The lamp of God has shone upon my head, and by his light I have walked through darkness; God’s intimate friendship has blessed my house. Job 29:3-4(NIV)

You have richly provided me with everything for my enjoyment, 1 Timothy 6:17(NIV) and into my hands have brought plentifully. Job 12:6(KJV)

Many times I have eaten to the full and reveled in your great goodness. Nehemiah 9:25(NIV)

When I remember how the LORD my God has led me all the way in the desert for so many years, Deuteronomy 8:2(NIV) I must here set up a stone and name it Ebenezer, for thus far has the LORD helped me. 1 Samuel 7:12(NIV)

Thank God for Granting you Recovery from Danger

Thanksgiving 4.6 | NIV

For signal recoveries from danger by sickness or otherwise.

When perhaps there has been but a step between me and death, 1 Samuel 20:3(NIV) and when I felt the sentence of death in my heart, 2 Corinthians 1:9(NIV) and have been ready to say, “In the prime of my life must I go through the gates of death and be robbed of the rest of my years?” Isaiah 38:10(NIV) Yet in your love you have kept me from the pit of destruction; you have put all my sins behind your back. Isaiah 38:17(NIV)

When the cords of death have entangled me and the anguish of the grave has come upon me, I have called upon the name of the LORD and have found that the LORD is gracious and righteous; my God is full of compassion. When I was in great need, he saved me; Psalm 116:3-6(NIV) he has delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears, and my feet from stumbling. I will therefore walk before the LORD in the land of the living. Psalm 116:8-9(NIV)

Thank God for Preserving you

Thanksgiving 4.5 | NIV

I must give thanks for my preservation; that my life is prolonged, and the use of my reason and understanding, my limbs and senses, are continued to me.

It was owing to your good providence that I did not perish at birth, and die as I came from the womb; that there were knees to receive me, and breasts that I might be nursed. Job 3:11-12(NIV)

Though I was called a rebel from birth, Isaiah 48:8(NIV) yet by your power I have been upheld since my conception and carried since my birth; Isaiah 46:3(NIV) and you preserve my life and keep my feet from slipping. Psalm 66:9(NIV)

My whole being shall exclaim, “Who is like you, O LORD?” Psalm 35:10(NIV) For you protect the bones, not one of them will be broken. Psalm 34:20(NIV)

I lie down and sleep, for you, O LORD, make me to dwell in safety. Psalm 4:8(NIV)

You have commanded your angels concerning me to guard me in all my ways; to lift me up in their hands, so that I do not strike my foot against a stone. Psalm 91:11-12(NIV) And they are all ministering spirits sent to serve for the good of those who will inherit salvation. Hebrews 1:14(NIV)

Thank God for Making you in His Image

Thanksgiving 4.4 | NIV

2dly, With reference to myself in particular.

I must give thanks that he has made me a reasonable creature, capable of knowing, loving, serving, and enjoying him, and that he has not made me like the beasts that perish.

I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made, and my soul, my nobler part, knows that full well; Psalm 139:14(NIV) for no one knows the thoughts of a man except the man’s spirit within him. 1 Corinthians 2:11(NIV)

You have made me of that rank of beings which is a little lower than the heavenly beings and is crowned with glory and honor; Psalm 8:5(NIV) for it is the spirit in a man, the breath of the Almighty, that gives him understanding; Job 32:8(NIV) and the spirit of man is the LORD’s lamp. Proverbs 20:27(NIV)

My body is capable of being the temple of the Holy Spirit, 1 Corinthians 6:19(NIV) and my soul of having God’s Spirit live in it; 1 Corinthians 3:16(NIV) I therefore honor you with my body and with my spirit, which are yours. 1 Corinthians 6:20(KJV)

You, Lord, have formed me for yourself that I might proclaim your praise. Isaiah 43:21(NIV)

Thank God for the Many Instances of His Goodness and Kind Providence (continued)

Thanksgiving 4.3 | NIV

The highest heavens belong to you, but the earth you have given to man; Psalm 115:16(NIV) and you have put everything under his feet and made him ruler over the works of your hands; Psalm 8:6(NIV) so that the fear and dread of man is upon all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air, and they are given into his hands; Genesis 9:2(NIV) because you had a favor to him, and you delight in mankind. Proverbs 8:31(NIV)

You make grass grow for the cattle, and plants for man to cultivate – bringing forth food from the earth: wine that gladdens the heart of man, oil to make his face shine, and bread that sustains his heart. Psalm 104:14-15(NIV)

You give all men life and breath and everything else; Acts 17:25(NIV) and the earth if filled with your love, O LORD. Psalm 119:64(NIV)

All creatures look to you to give them their food at the proper time: When you give it to them, they gather it up; when you open your hand, they are satisfied with good things. Psalm 104:27-28(NIV) When you send your Spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the earth. This, your glory, shall endure forever, and you rejoice in these works. Psalm 104:30-31(NIV)

It is through your goodness, O Lord, that generations come and generations go, Ecclesiastes 1:4(NIV) and that you have not blotted out the name of that corrupt and guilty race from under heaven. Deuteronomy 29:20(NIV)

Thank God for the Many Instances of His Goodness and Kind Providence

Thanksgiving 4.2 | NIV

With reference to all the creatures and the world of mankind in general. [continued]

You have not left yourself without testimony among the nations: You have shown kindness by giving them rain from heaven and crops in their seasons; you provide them with plenty of food and fill their hearts with joy. Acts 14:17(NIV)

You cover the sky with clouds; you supply the earth with rain and make grass grow on the hills. You provide food for the cattle and for the young ravens when they call. Psalm 147:8-9(NIV)

You cause it to rain on a desert with no one in it, to satisfy a desolate wasteland. Job 38:26-27(NIV)

You care for the land and water it; you enrich it abundantly. The streams of God are filled with water to provide the people with grain, for so you have ordained it; you drench its furrows and level its ridges; you soften it with showers and bless its crops. You crown the year with your bounty, and your carts overflow with abundance. Psalm 65:9-11(NIV)

You make springs pour water into the ravines; it flows between the mountains. They give water to all the beasts of the field; and by them the birds of the air nest, they sing among the branches. Psalm 104:10-12(NIV)

You have set the earth on its foundations, it can never be moved; Psalm 104:5(NIV) and have set a boundary the waters of the sea cannot cross; never again will they cover the earth. Psalm 104:9(NIV) You have shut up the sea with doors, Job 38:8(NIV) and fixed limits for it, saying, “This far you may come and no farther; here is where your proud waves halt.” Job 38:10-11(NIV) And you have made good what you have sworn: that the waters of Noah would never again cover the earth. Isaiah 54:9(NIV)

Your covenant with the day and with the night is not broken; Jeremiah 33:20(NIV) but still you appoint the sun to shine by day and decree the moon and stars to shine by night, Jeremiah 31:35(NIV) and are faithful to that covenant of providence: That as long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease. Genesis 8:22(NIV)

Be Particular in your Thanks to God, Marvel at His Good Nature and Kind Providence

Thanksgiving 4.1 | NIV

I must be particular in my thanksgivings to God,

For the discoveries which he has made to me in his word of the goodness of his nature.

I give thanks to the God of gods, to the Lord of lords, for his love endures forever. Psalm 136:2-3(NIV)

Your goodness is your glory, Exodus 33:19(NIV) and it is for that which all you have made praises you, and your saints extol you. Psalm 145:10(NIV)

You are gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love, Psalm 145:8(NIV) and have told your people that you do not willingly bring affliction or grief to the children of men, but, though you bring grief, yet you will show compassion, so great is your unfailing love. Lamentations 3:32-33(NIV)

You delight in those who fear you, who put their hope in your unfailing love. Psalm 147:11(NIV)

For the many instances of his goodness.

The goodness of his providence relating to my body and the life that now is; and this,

1st, With reference to all the creatures and the world of mankind in general.

You have stretched out the heavens like a tent, Psalm 104:2(NIV) and in them you have pitched a tent for the sun, which is like a bridegroom coming forth from his pavilion, like a champion rejoicing to run his course. Psalm 19:4-5(NIV) And you cause your sun to rise on the evil and the good, and send rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. Matthew 5:45(NIV)

When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the sun, the moon, and the stars, which you have set in place, Lord, what is man that you are mindful of him? Psalm 8:3-4(NIV) For truly the light is sweet, and it pleases the eyes to see the sun: Ecclesiastes 11:7(NIV) All glory be to the Father of the heavenly light, James 1:17(NIV) who gives orders to the morning and shows the dawn its place. Job 38:12(NIV)

Introduction and Exhortation to Stir Yourself Up to Praise God

Thanksgiving 4.0 | NIV

Of the Fourth Part of Prayer, which is Thanksgivings for the Mercies I have Received from God and the Many Favors of His I am Interested in and Have and Hope for Benefit by

My errand at the throne of grace is not only to seek the favor of God, but to ascribe to him the glory due his name, Psalm 29:2(NIV) and that, not only by an awful adoration of his infinite perfections, but by a grateful acknowledgment of his goodness to me, which cannot indeed add anything to his glory, but he is pleased to accept of it and to reckon himself glorified by it, if it comes from a heart that is humbly sensible of its own unworthiness to receive any favor from God, that values the gifts and loves the Giver of them.

I must stir up myself to praise God with the consideration both of the reason and of the encouragement I have to praise him.

I give thanks to you, O God, I give thanks, for your Name is near; I tell of your wonderful deeds. Psalm 75:1(NIV)

Let my soul praise the LORD, and let all my inmost being praise his holy name; yes, let my soul praise the LORD and not forget any of his benefits. Psalm 103:1-2(NIV)

I will praise the Lord, for it is good, it is pleasant, Psalm 92:1(NIV) and it is fitting for the upright to praise him; Psalm 33:1(NIV) yes, it is good to praise the LORD and make music to your name, O Most High, to proclaim your love in the morning and your faithfulness at night. Psalm 92:1-2(NIV)

I will exalt you, my God the King; I will praise your name for ever and ever: Every day I will praise you and extol your name for ever and ever; Psalm 145:1-2(NIV) I will celebrate your abundant goodness and joyfully sing of your righteousness. Psalm 145:7(NIV)

I will sing to the LORD a new song, his praise in the assembly of the saints. O let Israel rejoice in their Maker; let the people of Zion be glad in their King. Psalm 149:1-2(NIV) Let the saints rejoice in this honor, and may the praises of God be in their hearts and in their mouths. Psalm 149:5-6(NIV)

I will bless the LORD all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live. Psalm 146:2(NIV) And when I have no being on earth, I hope to have a being in heaven, to be doing it better.

I am here through Jesus Christ to offer to you a sacrifice of praise, which I desire to do continually – the fruit of lips that confess your name. Hebrews 13:15(NIV) And you have said that he who sacrifices thank offerings honors you, Psalm 50:23(NIV) and that this also will please the LORD more than an ox, more than a bull with its horns and hoofs. Psalm 69:31(NIV)

I will tell of the kindnesses of the LORD, the deeds for which he is to be praised, according to all the LORD has done for his people – yes, the many good things he has done for the house of Israel, according to his compassion and many kindnesses. Isaiah 63:7(NIV)

Plead the Promises of God for the Enforcing of your Petitions

Petition 3.41 | NIV

I must plead the promises of God for the enforcing of all my petitions, put these promises in suit, and refer myself to them.

Lord, you have given me many great and precious promises, 2 Peter 1:4(NIV) which are all “Yes” and “Amen” in Christ. 2 Corinthians 1:20(NIV) Now may it be to your servant as you have said. Luke 1:38(NIV)

Grant me to draw water with joy from these wells of salvation, Isaiah 12:3(NIV) to nurse and be satisfied at those comforting breasts; Isaiah 66:11(NIV) and now, LORD God, keep forever the promise you have made concerning your servant, and do as you have promised. 1 Chronicles 17:23(NIV)

Deal with me according to the tenor of the everlasting covenant, which is arranged and secured in every part, and which is all my salvation and all my desire. 2 Samuel 23:5(KJV)

Turn to me and have mercy on me, as you always do to those who love your name; Psalm 119:132(NIV) do immeasurably more for me than I am able to ask or imagine, Ephesians 3:20(NIV) and meet all my needs according to your glorious riches in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19(NIV)
