Profess your Believing Hope and Confidence in God

Adoration 1.17 | NIV

I must likewise profess my believing hope and confidence in God and his all-sufficiency, in his power, providence, and promise.

In you, O God, I have taken refuge; let me never be put to shame; Psalm 31:1(NIV) indeed, no one whose hope is in you will ever be put to shame. Psalm 25:3(NIV)

My soul finds rest in God alone; my salvation comes from him. He alone is my rock and my salvation. Psalm 62:1-2(NIV) My salvation and my honor depend on God; he is my mighty rock and my refuge; my hope comes from him. Psalm 62:5-7(NIV)

When I have no refuge, and no one cares for my life, I cry to you, O LORD, “You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living.” Psalm 142:4-5(NIV)

Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but I trust in the name of the LORD my God. Psalm 20:7(NIV) I will trust in your unfailing love, O God, forever and ever, and in your name I will hope, for it is good. Psalm 52:8-9(NIV)

I have put my hope in your word; Psalm 119:81(NIV) O remember your word to your servant, for you have given me hope. Psalm 119:49(NIV)

Humbly Profess the Desire of your Heart for God

Adoration 1.16 | NIV

I must humbly profess the desire of my heart towards God, as my felicity and portion and fountain of life and all good to me.

Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you or in comparison with you. When my flesh and my heart fail, be the strength of my heart and my portion forever, Psalm 73:25-26(NIV) the portion of my inheritance in the other world and of my cup in this; and then I will say that the boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places, and that I have a delightful inheritance. Psalm 16:5-6(NIV)

Your name and renown are the desire of my heart; my soul yearns for you in the night, and in the morning my spirit longs for you. Isaiah 26:8-9(NIV)

As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God, Psalm 42:1-2(NIV) who by day directs his love, and at night his song is with me – a prayer to the God of my life. Psalm 42:8(NIV)

O that I may come hungering and thirsting after righteousness, Matthew 5:6(NIV) for you fill the hungry with good things, but send the rich away empty. Luke 1:53(NIV)

O that my soul may thirst for you, and my body long for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water; that I may behold your power and your glory, as I have seen you in the sanctuary. Your love is better than life; Psalm 63:1-3(NIV) my soul will be satisfied as with the richest of foods, and then with singing lips my mouth will praise you. Psalm 63:5(NIV)

Express your Unworthiness to Draw Near to God

Adoration 1.15 | NIV

I must express the sense I have of my own meanness and unworthiness to draw near to God and speak to him.

But will God really dwell on earth with men? That God whom the heavens, even the highest heavens, cannot contain, 2 Chronicles 6:18(NIV) with man, who is but a maggot – a son of man, who is only a worm? Job 25:6(NIV)

Who am I, O Sovereign LORD, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far to present myself before the Lord? 2 Samuel 7:18(NIV) That I have through Christ an access to the Father by one Spirit? Ephesians 2:18(NIV) And yet, as if this were not enough in your sight, you have also spoken about the future of the house of your servant. Is this your usual way of dealing with man, O Sovereign LORD? 2 Samuel 7:19(NIV)

What is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him, Psalm 8:4(NIV) and thus magnify him?

May the Lord not be angry, Genesis 18:30(NIV) if I, who am nothing but dust and ashes, am so bold as to speak to the Lord of glory. Genesis 18:27(NIV)

I am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness you have shown your servant; Genesis 32:10(NIV) nor is it right to take the children’s bread and toss it to such as I am; but even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table; Matthew 15:26-27(NIV) and you richly bless with mercy all who call on you. Romans 10:12(NIV)

Acknowledge the Privilege of Drawing Near to God in Prayer

Adoration 1.14 | NIV

I must acknowledge it an unspeakable favor and an inestimable privilege that I am not only admitted, but invited and encouraged, to draw near to God in prayer.

You have commanded me to pray on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests, with thanksgiving, and to be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints; Ephesians 6:18(NIV) to continue in prayer, and in everything, by prayer and petition, to present my requests to God. Philippians 4:6(NIV)

You have directed me to ask and seek and knock; and have promised that it will be given to me, I will find, and the door will be opened to me. Matthew 7:7(NIV)

You have appointed for me a great High Priest, in whose name I may approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that I may receive mercy and find grace to help me in my time of need. Hebrews 4:16(NIV)

You have assured me that while you detest the sacrifice of the wicked, the prayer of the upright pleases you; Proverbs 15:8(NIV) and that he who sacrifices thank offerings honors you; Psalm 50:23(NIV) and the sacrifice of thanksgiving will please the LORD more than that of an ox or a bull with its horns and hoofs. Psalm 69:30-31(NIV)

You are he who hears prayer, and therefore to you all men will come. Psalm 65:2(NIV)

You say, “Seek my face!” And my heart answers, “Your face, LORD, I will seek.” Psalm 27:8(NIV) For, should not a person inquire of his God? Isaiah 8:19(NIV) To whom shall I go but to you? You have the words of eternal life. John 6:68(NIV)

Own your Relation to God

Adoration 1.13 | NIV

I must declare this God to be my God and own my relation to him, his dominion over me, and propriety in me.

I said to the LORD, “You are my God; apart from you I have no good thing; Psalm 16:2(NIV) even if I am righteous, what do I give to you?” Job 35:7(NIV)

You are my King and my God: Psalm 44:4(NIV) Other lords besides you have ruled over me, but from henceforth your name alone do I honor. Isaiah 26:13(NIV)

I declare this day that the LORD is my God and that I will walk in his ways, that I will keep his decrees, commands, and laws, and that I will obey him and give myself to him, to be of his people, of his treasured possession as he has promised, that I may be of a people holy to the LORD my God; Deuteronomy 26:17-19(NIV) and may be to him for his renown and praise and honor. Jeremiah 13:11(NIV)

O LORD, truly I am your servant; I am your servant, born in your house, and you have freed me from my chains: Psalm 116:16(NIV) I have been bought at a price, and therefore I am not my own; 1 Corinthians 6:19-20(NIV) and so I submit to the Lord, 2 Chronicles 30:8(NIV) and bind myself to him in an everlasting covenant that will not be forgotten. Jeremiah 50:5(NIV)

Save me, for I am yours; I have sought out your precepts; Psalm 119:94(NIV) it is your own, Lord, that I give you, and that which comes from your hand. 1 Chronicles 29:16(NIV)

Acknowledge your Dependence on God and your Obligations to Him

Adoration 1.12 | NIV

I must acknowledge my dependence upon God and my obligations to him as my Creator, Preserver, and Benefactor.

You, O God, made me, and not I myself, and therefore I am not my own but yours: 1 Corinthians 6:19(NIV) I am of your people and of the sheep of your pasture; Psalm 100:3(NIV) let me therefore worship and fall down and kneel before the Lord my Maker. Psalm 95:6(NIV)

You, Lord, are the former of my body, and it is fearfully and wonderfully made and curiously wrought. Your eyes saw my unformed body, and all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. Psalm 139:14-16(NIV)

You have clothed me with skin and flesh, and knit me together with bones and sinews; you have given me life and showed me kindness, and in your providence have watched over my spirit. Job 10:11-12(NIV)

You are the Father of my spirit, Hebrews 12:9(NIV) for you form the spirit of man within him, Zechariah 12:1(NIV) and give me breath. Jeremiah 38:16(NIV) The Spirit of God has made me; the breath of the Almighty gives me life. Job 33:4(NIV) You endow the heart with wisdom and give understanding to the mind. Job 38:36(NIV)

You are God my Maker, who teaches more to me than to the beasts of the earth and makes me wiser than the birds of the air. Job 35:10-11(NIV)

I am the clay, you are the potter; I am the work of your hand. Isaiah 64:8(NIV)

You brought me out of the womb and made me trust in you even at my mother’s breast; from birth I have been cast upon you and have relied on you. Psalm 22:9-10(NIV) You are my God from my mother’s womb, and therefore I will ever praise you. Psalm 71:6(NIV)

In you, O God, I live and move and have my being, for I am your offspring. Acts 17:28(NIV)

In your hand you hold my life and all my ways, Daniel 5:23(NIV) for a man’s life is not his own; it is not for man to direct his steps, Jeremiah 10:23(NIV) but my times are in your hands. Psalm 31:15(NIV)

You are the God who has been my shepherd all my life to this day and has delivered me from all harm. Genesis 48:15-16(NIV)

It is because of your great love that I am not consumed, for your compassions never fail: they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. Lamentations 3:22-23(NIV)

If you take away my breath, I die and return to the dust out of which I was taken. Psalm 104:29(NIV)

Who can speak and have it happen if you have not decreed it? From your mouth, O Most High, both calamities and good things come. Lamentations 3:37-38(NIV)

Give Honor to the Triune God – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit

Adoration 1.11 | NIV

We must give honor to the three persons in the Godhead distinctly, to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, that great and sacred Name into which we were baptized and in which we assemble for religious worship, in communion with the universal church.

I pay my homage to three that testify in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; for these three are one. 1 John 5:7(KJV)

I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, Matthew 11:25(NIV) and the eternal Word, who was with God in the beginning and was God, through whom all things were made; without whom nothing was made that has been made; John 1:1-3(NIV) and who, when the time had fully come, Galatians 4:4(NIV) became flesh and made his dwelling among us and showed his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:14(NIV)

And since it is the will of God that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father, John 5:23(NIV) I adore him as the radiance of his Father’s glory and the exact representation of his being; Hebrews 1:3(NIV) herein joining with the angels of God, who were all bidden to worship him. Hebrews 1:6(NIV)

I pay homage to the exalted Redeemer, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth, Revelation 1:5(NIV) confessing that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Philippians 2:11(NIV)

I also worship the Holy Spirit, the Counselor, whom the Son has sent from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, John 15:26(NIV) and who is sent to teach me all things and to remind me of everything; John 14:26(NIV) who indited the Scriptures, holy men of God writing them as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. 2 Peter 1:21(NIV)

Give Glory to God as the Creator of the World

Adoration 1.10 | NIV

I must give glory to him as the Creator of the world and the great Protector, Benefactor, and Ruler of the whole creation.

You are worthy, O Lord, to receive blessing and honor and glory and power, for you created all things, and by your will and for your praise they were created and have their being. Revelation 4:11(NIV)

I worship him who made the heavens, the earth, the sea, and the springs of water; Revelation 14:7(NIV) who spoke, and it came to be; who commanded, and it stood firm; Psalm 33:9(NIV) who said, “Let there be light,” and there was light; Genesis 1:3(NIV) “Let there be an expanse,” and he made the expanse; Genesis 1:6-7(NIV) and he made all very good; Genesis 1:31(NIV) and they endure to this day according to your laws, for all things serve you. Psalm 119:91(NIV)

The day is yours, and yours also the night; you established the sun and moon. It was you who set all the boundaries of the earth; you made both summer and winter. Psalm 74:16-17(NIV)

You sustain all things by your powerful word, Hebrews 1:3(NIV) and in you all things hold together. Colossians 1:17(NIV)

The earth is full of your creatures, so also is the vast and spacious sea. Psalm 104:24-25(NIV) The eyes of all look to you, and you give them their food at the proper time: You open your hand and satisfy the desires of every living thing. Psalm 145:15-16(NIV) You preserve both man and beast, Psalm 36:6(NIV) and give food to every creature. Psalm 136:25(NIV)

You alone are the LORD. You made the heavens, even the highest heavens, and all their starry host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them. You give life to everything, and the multitudes of heaven worship you, Nehemiah 9:6(NIV) whose kingdom rules over all. Psalm 103:19(NIV)

A sparrow will not fall to the ground apart from your will. Matthew 10:29(NIV)

You formed man at first from the dust of the ground and breathed into him the breath of life, and so he became a living being. Genesis 2:7(NIV)

From one man you made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and you determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live. Acts 17:26(NIV)

You are the Most High, who is sovereign over the kingdoms of men and gives them to anyone he wishes; Daniel 4:25(NIV) for it is from you that man gets justice. Proverbs 29:26(NIV)

Hallelujah! The Lord God Almighty reigns, Revelation 19:6(NIV) and works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, for the praise of his own glory. Ephesians 1:11-12(NIV)

Praise God for His Heavenly Splendor and Glory

Adoration 1.9 | NIV

I must give to God the praise of that splendor and glory wherein he is pleased to manifest himself in the upper world.

You have established your throne in heaven, Psalm 103:19(NIV) and it is a throne of glory, high and exalted; and before you the seraphs cover their faces. Isaiah 6:1-2(NIV) And it is in compassion to your people that you hold back the face of that throne, spreading your clouds over it. Job 26:9(KJV)

You make your messengers winds, and your servants flames of fire. Psalm 104:4(KJV) Thousands upon thousands of them minister to you, and ten thousand times ten thousand stand before you, to do your pleasure. Revelation 5:11(NIV) They are mighty ones who do your bidding, who obey your word. Psalm 103:20-21(NIV) And I have come by faith and hope and holy love into a spiritual communion with thousands upon thousands of angels and the spirits of righteous men made perfect, even to the joyful assembly and the church of the firstborn, to the heavenly Jerusalem. Hebrews 12:22-23(NIV)

Acknowledge God’s Unchanging Truth and Greatness

Adoration 1.8 | NIV

That his truth is invariable, and the treasures of his goodness inexhaustible.

You are good, and your love endures forever. Psalm 136:1(NIV)

Your love is great toward me, Psalm 117:2(NIV) and your faithfulness continues through all generations. Psalm 100:5(NIV)

You have proclaimed your name: The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion, and sin. Exodus 34:6-7(NIV) And this name of yours is my strong tower. Proverbs 18:10(NIV)

You are good, and what you do is good, Psalm 119:68(NIV) good to all; and you have compassion on all you have made. Psalm 145:9(NIV) But surely God is in a special manner good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart. Psalm 73:1(NIV)

O that you would cause your goodness to pass in front of me, Exodus 33:19(NIV) that I may taste and see that the LORD is good, Psalm 34:8(NIV) and your love may be ever before me. Psalm 26:3(NIV)

Lastly, that when I have said all I can of the glorious perfections of the Divine nature, I fall infinitely short of the merit of the subject.

And these are but the outer fringe of his works; how faint the whisper I hear of him! Who then can understand the thunder of his power? Job 26:14(NIV)

The Almighty is beyond my reach and exalted in power; and in his justice and great righteousness, Job 37:23(NIV) he is exalted above all blessing and praise. Nehemiah 9:5(NIV)
