Understand the Condemning Nature of your Sin

Confession 2.18 | NIV

I must judge and condemn myself for my sins, and own myself liable to punishment.

And now, O my God, what can I say after this? For I have disregarded the commands. Ezra 9:10(NIV) I have sinned; what have I done to you, you watcher of men? Job 7:20(NIV)

I know that the law curses everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law; Galatians 3:10(NIV) that the wages of every sin is death; Romans 6:23(NIV) and that for these things’ sake God’s wrath comes on those who are disobedient. Ephesians 5:6(NIV)

And I am held accountable to God; Romans 3:19(NIV) the Scripture declares me a prisoner of sin; Galatians 3:22(NIV) and therefore you might justly be angry enough with me to destroy me, so that I should not be left among your remnant or your survivors. Ezra 9:14(NIV)

If you should make justice the measuring line and righteousness the plumb line, Isaiah 28:17(NIV) you might justly separate me to all evil, according to all the curses of the covenant, and blot out my name from under heaven. Deuteronomy 29:20(KJV)

You might justly declare on oath in your anger that I should never enter your rest; Psalm 95:11(NIV) might justly strip me naked and bare, Hosea 2:3(NIV) and take away my grain when it ripens, Hosea 2:9(NIV) and put into my hands the goblet that makes men stagger, and make me drain it to its dregs. Isaiah 51:17(NIV)

You have been just in all that you have been pleased to lay upon me; for you have acted faithfully, while I have done wrong. Nehemiah 9:33(NIV) Indeed, you, my God, have punished me less than my sins have deserved. Ezra 9:13(NIV)

You therefore shall be proved right when you speak and justified when you judge; Psalm 51:4(NIV) and I will accept the punishment for my sins, Leviticus 26:43(KJV) and humble myself under your mighty hand, 1 Peter 5:6(NIV) and say, “The LORD is just.” 2 Chronicles 12:6(NIV)

Why should any living man complain when punished for his sins? Lamentations 3:39(NIV) No, I will bear the LORD’s wrath, because I have sinned against him. Micah 7:9(NIV)

Confession 2.18 | ESV

We must judge and condemn ourselves for our sins, and own ourselves liable to punishment.

And now, O my God, what shall I say after this, for I have forsaken your commandments? Ezra 9:10(ESV) I have sinned; what have I done to you, you watcher of mankind? Job 7:20(ESV)

I know that the law curses everyone who does not abide by all things written in the book of the law and do them; Galatians 3:10(ESV) that the wages of every sin is death; Romans 6:23(ESV) and that for these things’ sake the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. Ephesians 5:6(ESV)

And I am accountable to God; Romans 3:19(ESV) the Scripture has imprisoned me under sin; Galatians 3:22(ESV) and therefore you might justly be angry with me until you consumed me, so that I should neither be of your remnant, nor able to escape. Ezra 9:14(ESV)

If you should make justice the line, and righteousness the plumb line, Isaiah 28:17(ESV) you might justly separate me to all evil, according to all the curses of the covenant, and blot out my name from under heaven. Deuteronomy 29:20(ESV)

You might justly swear in your wrath that I should never enter your rest; Psalm 95:11(ESV) might justly strip me naked and bare, Hosea 2:3(ESV) and take back my grain in its time, Hosea 2:9(ESV) and put into my hands the cup of staggering, and make me drink even to the dregs of that cup. Isaiah 51:17(ESV)

You have been righteous in all that has come upon me, for you have dealt faithfully and I have acted wickedly. Nehemiah 9:33(ESV) Indeed, my God has punished me less than my iniquities deserved. Ezra 9:13(ESV)

You therefore shall be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment; Psalm 51:4(ESV) and I will accept of the punishment of my iniquity, Leviticus 26:43(ESV) and humble myself under your mighty hand, 1 Peter 5:6(ESV) and say, “The LORD is righteous.” 2 Chronicles 12:6(ESV)

Why should a living man complain, a man, about the punishment of his sins? Lamentations 3:39(ESV) No, I will bear the indignation of the LORD, because I have sinned against him. Micah 7:9(ESV)

Consider your Evil Sins in Light of the Corrections you have Received and the Vows you have Made

Confession 2.17 | KJV

The greater afflictions I have been under for sin, the greater is the sin if I go on in it.

Thou hast stricken me, but I have not grieved; I have refused to receive correction and have made my face harder than a rock, Jeremiah 5:3(KJV) and the rod hath not driven the foolishness out of my heart. Proverbs 22:15(KJV)

Thou hast chastened me with the rod of men and with the stripes of the children of men, 2 Samuel 7:14(KJV) yet I have not turned to him that smiteth me, nor have I sought the Lord of hosts. Isaiah 9:13(KJV)

When some have been overthrown as Sodom and Gomorrah were, I have been as a brand plucked out of the fire; yet have I not returned unto thee, O Lord. Amos 4:11(KJV) And when thy hand has been lifted up, I have not seen it. Isaiah 26:11(KJV)

The more vows and promises I have made of better obedience, the greater has my sin been.

I have not performed the words of the covenant which I have made before thee; Jeremiah 34:18(KJV) but as a treacherous dealer, I have dealt treacherously. Isaiah 24:16(KJV)

Did I not say I would not transgress, Jeremiah 2:20(KJV) I would not offend any more? Job 34:31(KJV) I did, and yet I have returned with the dog to his vomit; 2 Peter 2:22(KJV) I have returned to folly after God hath spoken peace. Psalm 85:8(KJV)

Consider your Evil Sins in Light of the Mercies and Warnings of God

Confession 2.16 | KJV

The more mercies I have received from God, the greater has been my sin.

Thou hast nourished and brought me up as a child, but I have rebelled against thee. Isaiah 1:2(KJV)

I have ill requited thee, O Lord, as a foolish person and unwise: Thou art my Father that made me and bought me and established me, yet my spot has not been the spot of one of thy children. Deuteronomy 32:5-6(KJV)

I have not rendered again according to the benefit done unto me. 2 Chronicles 32:25(KJV)

The fairer warning I have had from the word of God and from my own conscience concerning my danger of sin and danger by sin, the greater is the sin if I go on in it.

I have been often reproved, and yet have hardened my neck, Proverbs 29:1(KJV) and have gone on frowardly in the way of my heart. Isaiah 57:17(KJV)

Thou hast sent to me, saying, O do not this abominable thing which I hate; but I have not hearkened nor inclined my ear. Jeremiah 44:4-5(KJV)

The word of God hath been to me precept upon precept and line upon line; Isaiah 28:13(KJV) and though I have beheld my natural face in the glass, yet I have gone away and straightway forgot what manner of man I am. James 1:23-24(KJV)

Confession 2.16 | NASB

The more mercies I have received from God, the greater has been my sin.

You have reared and brought me up as a son, but I have revolted against You. Isaiah 1:2(NASB)

I have ill repaid You, O LORD, as a foolish and unwise person: You are my Father who made me and bought me and established me, yet my mark has not been the mark of one of Your children. Deuteronomy 32:5-6(KJV)

I have not given a return for the benefit I have received. 2 Chronicles 32:25(NASB)

The fairer warning I have had from the word of God and from my own conscience concerning my danger of sin and danger by sin, the greater is the sin if I go on in it.

I have received much reproof, and yet have hardened my neck, Proverbs 29:1(NASB) and have gone on turning away, in the way of my heart. Isaiah 57:17(NASB)

You have sent to me, saying, “Oh, do not do this abominable thing which I hate”; but I have not listened nor inclined my ear. Jeremiah 44:4-5(NASB)

The word of God has been to me order on order and line on line; Isaiah 28:13(NASB) and though I have looked at my natural face in the mirror, yet I have gone away and immediately forgotten what kind of person I was. James 1:23-24(NASB)

You have reared me as a child and brought me up, but I have rebelled against you. Isaiah 1:2(NIV)

Even after many rebukes, I have remained stiff-necked, Proverbs 29:1(NIV) and have kept on in my willful ways. Isaiah 57:17(NIV)

The more mercies we have received from God, the greater has been our sin.

You have reared and brought me up as a child, but I have rebelled against you. Isaiah 1:2(ESV)

I have ill repaid you, O LORD, as a foolish and senseless person: You are my Father who created me, who made me and established me, yet my mark has not been the mark of one of your children. Deuteronomy 32:5-6(KJV)

I have not made return according to the benefit done to me. 2 Chronicles 32:25(ESV)
